  1. TiVo is the most wonderful contraption in the world. Me, who doesn’t watch TV… yeah. 23 season passes later, I only TiVo 🙂 Someone actually reads GeekGoesMeow?? Wow – I thought it was just my collection of things to make sure I read when I got home 🙂 Excellent!

I haven’t tried the build your own DVR thing yet, but I was toying with the idea of building one. I have a spare PC and a TiVo-less television that gets little use… well, because it doesn’t have TiVo!

  2. He has some good ideas, but do your research first. This thing is strictly for television; it’s anemic as a HTPC. The AV quality would hurt to experience. The software’s a hodgepodge–Win DVD is awful, but Snapstream’s stuff is quite good, as is remote VNC (but you should really just have two monitors); and the hardware isn’t enough to do much beyond TV tuning. It doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of upscaling a DVD and probably can’t do much with DScaler, so unless you’re sticking to a puny sub-50″ screen, put more power into it. If you build a good HTPC, recording TV will be well below the capabilities of the system and probably already there (i.e., you’d just hit record). Of course, if you’re just going to watch TV and play video games, then this is adequate. Of course, if you’re just going to watch TV and play video games, you need to get out more.
